Google have always tried to keep their first page of search as clean as possible. This was done so that visitors with low Internet speed and 2g on their phone can search faster than any other search engine. For the first time in last 18years Google has change their google search page.
Though the change is not that dramatic, It has reduced the link on the site and gave a grid on the right side to search for more google products. There are only 3 tab available directly Google plus, GMail, images. This also means that visitors have less option and would have their go on Google plus rather than going for any other link like YouTube which has become the company's best product.
One more important thing is google search is default site on many browser so people are not typing google. Its there whenever they open their browser. By reducing the option google may increase traffic on their google plus project.
The second page is the same with no changes.
